Superintendent's Welcome
Welcome to your Anacortes Public Schools. As a former coach, teacher, and principal and now as your superintendent with over twenty five years in the District, I share your pride in our schools and the commitment to making them even better.
We value your support and never forget that our community and parents trust us with their most valued assets-their children- and expect us to mold each and every one of them into productive and compassionate citizens. An incredible challenge, but one with the help of staff, parents, and community working together we can achieve.
This year Anacortes District embarks on year two of our strategic plan called Charting a Course to Excellence.Anacortes School District is CHARTING A COURSE TO EXCELLENCE by preparing its students to meet world class learning standards and to become School, Transition and College/Work Ready, through the vehicle of extraordinary instruction.
Why School, Transition and College/Work Ready Goals?
The research clearly shows students who are school ready, meaning they enter
Kindergarten and First grade with the appropriate literacy and mathematical
readiness skills, generally thrive in their academic development throughout their
school years. In addition, we know the most vulnerable time for any student is their
first year transitioning into a new level, i.e. elementary to middle school and middle
school to high school. Those students who make a successful academic transition
during their first year are significantly less likely to become credit deficient and/or
drop out. Research continues to verify the need for all students to participate in
rigorous and relevant college preparation courses.College ready skills in mathematics,
English and science, etc. prepare student to not only become college ready, but are also
now applied and used in all vocations.
Why enhancing quality instruction as the “vehicle” or a “theory of action” to
achieve the District’s Readiness Goals or Ends?
In the September 2007 international study How the World’s Best Performing Schools
Come out on Top, McKinsey and Company identified common themes and tools found
in high performing school systems. The experience of these top school systems
suggests that three things matter most:
- Getting the right people to become teachers
- Developing them into effective instructors
- Ensuring that the system is able to deliver the best possible instruction for every child
- The quality of an education system cannot exceed the quality of its teachers.
- The only way to improve outcomes is to improve instruction.
- High performance requires every child to succeed.
Therefore, the Anacortes School District adopted as its vehicle to achieve its readiness goals or ends, the following Theory of Action:
Quality Instruction leads to powerful learning and thinking.
It is our belief that by focusing as a system our resources, strategies and efforts on
increasing the quality of instruction our students receive, they will reach world class
academic standards and become School, Transition and College/Work Ready.
As a way to measure the effectiveness of our implementation of our Theory of Action, Anacortes School District will monitor student progress towards its end goals of ensuring students are School, Transition and College/Work Ready.
Please don’t just sit back and watch our progress towards these goals; instead, roll up your sleeves and join us in this incredible journey. Our District’s vision is to be a Lighthouse for Public Education in our Community. I sincerely believe that our District can be a Beacon for What’s Best in Public Education, but only if our staff, parents and community partner to create world class instruction and learning environments. While Anacortes schools have a legacy of educational excellence, the future can be even brighter, but only if it’s a collaborative future. We welcome your support.
If you would like to assist in this extraordinary mission, please call me at 293-1210 or E-mail me at cbogren@asd103.org.Your skills, insights and contributions are needed and appreciated. In addition, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have concerns or questions. As our teachers remind our students:“you can’t learn from your mistakes if you don’t know what they are.”
Our schools belong to the public. Let us never rest until every child graduates with the skills to thrive as contributing and compassionate citizens.
Go Seahawks!
Sincerely,
Chris Borgen, Superintendent
